From a meditative Bairagi ascetic to the warrior who shattered the Mughal Empire in Northern India.
Born into a Dogra Rajput family in Jammu, Lachman Dev was an avid hunter. One day, he shot a pregnant doe. Watching the fawn die in agony shattered his worldly attachments, planting the seed of Vairagya in his heart.
At just 15, he renounced the world. Wandering across India as a Bairagi ascetic, he spent years in deep meditation, mastering Tantric practices. He established a famous ashram in Nanded, Maharashtra, known for his spiritual powers.
In September 1708, Guru Gobind Singh Ji visited his ashram. The Guru awakened the dormant warrior within the ascetic, baptizing him into the Khalsa. He was given the name "Banda Singh Bahadur" and a sword, dispatched to Punjab to fight Mughal tyranny.
The meditating Bairagi transformed into a brilliant military commander. His spiritual discipline translated into unmatched strategic courage, uniting the oppressed and leading them to historic victories.
Banda's first major military campaign. Armed with the Guru's blessing and a small band of Sikhs, he captured the heavily fortified town of Samana, destroying the power of the local Mughal nobles who had executed the Guru's younger sons.
His most legendary triumph. Despite being heavily outnumbered, Banda Singh defeated the powerful Mughal governor Wazir Khan, avenging the martyrdom of the Sahibzadas (Guru's sons) and liberating the region from Mughal cruelty.
Banda Singh struck coins in the name of Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind Singh, establishing the first sovereign Sikh rule. He abolished the oppressive Zamindari system, giving land ownership rights to the actual tillers of the soil—a revolutionary social reform.
The Mughal Emperor Farrukhsiyar sent a massive army to crush him. Banda Singh and his men held the fort of Gurdas Nangal for eight agonizing months against a blockade. Starved and out of ammunition, they were finally captured.
"In June 1716, Banda Singh Bahadur was executed in Delhi after refusing to convert to Islam. Even as his young son was killed before his eyes, he remained steadfast, dying with the words 'Waheguru' on his lips."
His martyrdom cemented his legacy as a symbol of resistance. The Bairagi who picked up the sword not for power, but for justice and Dharma.
